Recommending a Higher Level of Care does not automatically end the current therapeutic relationship or treatment episode.
Transitions between levels of care can create gaps in treatment, which may increase risk. When clinically appropriate, providers should consider how to maintain engagement and continuity while the client transitions to the recommended level of care.
What can transition support include?
Depending on the client's circumstances and clinical needs, this may include:
- Continuing clinically appropriate contact
- Monitoring changes in symptoms and risk
- Supporting the client in accessing the recommended level of care
- Reviewing and revising the client's safety plan as needed
- Coordinating with other providers, when appropriate and authorized
- Clarifying follow-up plans
- Clarifying the provider's role during the transition
Should I continue treating the client?
Unless continuing care would be clinically inappropriate, inconsistent with Talkspace policies or procedures, or otherwise contraindicated, providers should consider how to maintain appropriate engagement until the client has successfully transitioned to the recommended level of care.
There may be situations where continued treatment or clinical engagement is not appropriate. Use clinical judgment and seek consultation when needed.
