Crisis Response Planning

What Is Crisis Response Planning?

Crisis Response Planning (CRP) focuses on creating clear, actionable steps a client can use during periods of increased distress.

What Does a Crisis Response Plan Include?

A crisis response plan may include:

  • Increased awareness of personal warning signs
  • Step-by-step actions the client can take
  • Things that provide a sense of purpose or reasons for living
  • When and how to seek support
  • How to access crisis or emergency care
  • Steps for maintaining environmental and physical safety

What Makes a Crisis Response Plan Effective?

Plans should be:

  • Collaborative
  • Individualized
  • Practical
  • Easy to follow
  • Aligned with the client’s current level of risk and functioning
  • Reviewed and updated as clinically appropriate

The plan should also be easily accessible. Clients may choose to keep a handwritten copy or store the plan digitally.
